At the beginning of the school year, a first-grade student was struggling with frequent absences and behavior issues while at school. His CIS Site Coordinator could see this was a result of only ever been in school during the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic took a large toll on our kids and their families and, in this case, it was evident. Being home for long periods of time made it challenging for this student to be away from home and his mom. He was battling extreme separation anxiety and it was challenging to keep him at school and engaged in learning. His parents were at a loss and weren’t sure what to do.
His CIS Site Coordinator assured them that she would not give up on him and they would figure this out together. She began implementing a behavior plan with a reward system. He liked that he could earn stickers on his chart for staying in class and staying in his seat. Overtime, his Site Coordinator started to see improvements. The biggest thing that she noticed working for the student was consistency both at school and at home.
By the end of the school year, he was a completely different child. He came to school almost every day (and loved it), he had friends, he walked to class all by himself and he was engaged in learning.
