When I became pregnant at eighteen, I dropped out of school in order to raise my child. Life was especially difficult as my first baby was diagnosed with hydrocephalus. I provided my daughter with twenty-four hour care because I was afraid she would die at any moment.
Working closely with doctors, studying medical texts, and nursing a very sick little girl gave me my first taste of medicine. Unfortunately, my baby lost the fight and died after three months. After two more children, I decided that the time had come to think about my dream of a carreer in medicine that had arisen during my daughter's illness.
I went to College of San Mateo to pursue my education. The scholarship I received made it possible for me to continue towards my degree in nursing.
As a mother of two girls, ages 9 and 12, and attending college full-time, I am able to work only 8-12 hours per week. A scholarship provides that extra support so I can complete college and care for my family. After college, I hope to specialize as an operating room nurse.
